A typical on-site energy system is composed of cogeneration engines, renewable energy sources (e.g. photovoltaic panel, solar water heater, wind turbine), and energy storage. This research aims to develop a general optimization framework for deciding system configuration and temporal operation profile of distributed on-site power & heat supply systems including renewable energy sources and energy storage. Especially, the framework in this study is focused on obtaining the optimum system configuration for achieving environmental goals (e.g. a certain value of renewable energy portion or primary energy reduction) with minimum total cost. The framework can be used for design of on-site energy systems for a certain energy demand, and/or evaluation of various energy policies (e.g. renewable energy obligation, incentives for energy storage).
